   Anthem worked with John Kirkland on an exciting and complicated historic reuse project in the lower Chautauqua neighborhood of Boulder, Colorado. The project, which reinforced and re-supported a two-wing, early 1900s masonry building and installed a new full-depth basement under much of the structure while leaving the above ground building in place, provides a beautiful mid-density housing option for the neighborhood. The building tells an important part of Boulder’s story and as such, was landmarked prior to construction beginning. Anthem and their architectural partners, ESA, supported John’s vision of transforming a long-neglected 100-year-old fraternity building into appropriate, state-of-the-art housing that can be celebrated for artfully serving the community for the next century.   

   Sopher Sparn and Anthem’s relationship has been one of supportive collaboration and nimble adaptation.  Our collaboration on residential projects like one in the White Hawk Ranch community, a 5 ,000 s.f. single family home in Boulder, CO, has led to streamlined structural solutions through strong communication and the understanding of project intricacies.  In the case of White Hawk Ranch, Sopher Sparn and Anthem worked together to replicate a family home the clients owned previously, in another state.  The structure includes a rooftop balcony, a complex roof design that required creativity and analysis to provide a functional second floor layout with storage solutions, as well as an extensive wrap around porch. Furthermore, Sopher Sparn and Anthem had the great opportunity to work on the Front Range Farmhouse together – a highly complex structural design with intricate architectural detailing.   

Derek (Henderson) is an invaluable member to any project team …he is very willing to listen to and incorporate suggestions from the architect and other team members. He is well-versed in the various disciplines of a building project, particularly construction, enabling him to design structural solutions that are elegant and fit into the overall parameters of the project. He takes the time to understand the architecture of the project and works extremely hard to make his solutions work with no negative impacts to the design. Derek is also very proactive, bringing up potential issues early in the design phases so that they can be addressed in a timely and cost-effective manner.

We just completed a complicated remodel of a large office building that was made possible by the thorough structural investigation and subsequent design provided by Anthem Engineering. We really appreciate their sensitivity to project budget and schedule.
